PTA Summer Newsletter, August 2017

Welcome

On behalf of the Diamond PTA, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year! The PTA serves as a valuable resource for Diamond families by keeping you informed of school events and news via our daily announcements, weekly newsletters, and our website; providing grants and funding to teachers and staff for supplies and projects; supporting student clubs and intramural sports; and sponsoring social activities for both parents and children. You can learn more about the PTA by visiting this website.

In order to do all of this, we need your support! Please see below to find out how you can help us provide the services and support our school needs. Feel free to email us at diamondpta@gmail.com if you have any questions!

Diamond PTA co-Presidents

First Day of School Info

  • 8/29 is the first day for 6th graders only. Be waiting at the Hancock St. door no later than 8:00am. School will dismiss at 1:00 that day.
  • On that day, students should bring a lunch, as well as a notebook and pencil or pen.
  • 8/30 is a full day (8:00am-2:50pm) for ALL students.

Diamond Directory

  • 6th grade families: If you are coming from Estabrook, Hastings, or Fiske you will receive an email in the next 2 weeks with instructions on how to confirm or edit your child’s information in our directory website (www.myschoolanywhere.com).
  • Returning 7th & 8th grade families: If you are already in the system, you will receive a confirmation email in the next 2 weeks.
  • New 7th & 8th grade families or families from non-feeder schools: Please email us at directory@diamondpta.org for instructions on how to enter your information.

Please email the directory team (directory@diamondpta.org) if you have questions. We ask that everyone confirm their child’s info no later than September 15th . Even if you do not want your information published in the directory, you must have an email address in our system to receive the daily announcements, weekly newsletter, and other electronic PTA communications.

Donating to the Diamond PTA

After entering your child’s information into the website , you’ll be asked to make a “membership donation”. Unlike other PTAs, the Diamond PTA doesn’t do fundraising throughout the year. We simply ask families to make a one-time donation at the start of the year… that’s it!

We need everyone’s support to make this year a success, so please consider donating! Anyone who contributes $35 or more will receive electronic access to the Diamond directory and copies of all our e-communications (e.g., Diamond Daily Announcements, weekly e-newsletters, messages about school events and activities, etc…). You will also become a member, through the Diamond PTA, of the Mass PTA. Donations of $60 or more will receive all of the above, plus a copy of our print directory. Additional copies of the print directory can be purchased online.

FAQs About Diamond

What time does the building open for students?

The school opens at 7:50 am. On inclement weather days, students may enter at 7:30 am and wait in the lobby until 7:50am, when they’ll be allowed to proceed to their homeroom.

What time do classes start and end?

Homeroom starts promptly at 8:00 am and lasts for approx. 5 minutes. This is where attendance for the day is taken. Classes start at 8:05am and end at 2:50 pm. On half days, classes end at 11:45 am.

Where can I drop my child off in the morning?

There are 2 entrances: the main entrance on Hancock Street (off the traffic circle) and the back entrance on Sedge Road. There are bike racks at both locations, for students biking to school. Due to construction, please be sure to check the website for changes to traffic patterns.

How do I learn where my child’s bus stop will be?

Bus routes are posted at http://lps.lexingtonma.org/page/3215.

Where can I get a copy of my child’s schedule?

Students receive a copy of their daily schedule on the first day of school. Student schedules are also available in the Aspen Portal (under the student view).

Does my child get a locker and where can s/he find the combination if it is lost?

All students are assigned a locker on their first day. They are given a combination and time to practice using the lock. They should write the combination down someplace safe at home. However, if they need help with their locker, they should go to the office for assistance.

What should I do if my child is going to be absent or late or needs to be picked up early?

If your child is going to be late or absent, please email diamondabsence@lexingtonma.org

. You may also call the school’s attendance line (781-861-2460, option 1). For early dismissals, please send your child to school with a note stating the time & reason for the dismissal. Your child should bring the note to the office upon arrival and will be given a dismissal pass. If your child brings a note, you do not need to come into the building to pick up; s/he will be allowed to walk out to your car when you arrive. However, if you call the school for an early dismissal, you will be required to come into the building to sign your child out.

Do I need to let the school know of changes to my child’s regular dismissal routine?

Unlike elementary school, the front office does not monitor children’s dismissal activities. While you and your child should clearly communicate where and how they are going after school, the front office does not need a note outlining a student’s dismissal plans.

What can I do if my child forgets something at home?

Parents can drop off forgotten items at the front office. Please be sure to mark the child’s name clearly on the item. Note: the office can only call students out of class for lunch, money for lunch, or eyeglasses. All other items will be kept at the front office until the end of the school day, when students can come pick them up.

How can I contact my student at school?

Typically, you are not able to reach your student during the school day. Cell phone calls and text messages are not allowed. In emergency cases, you can call the main office and they will make sure a message is sent to your child.

Does my student need a cell phone?

No, Diamond students do not need cell phones. Cell phone use isn’t permitted during school hours, and phones must be kept in lockers during this time. Students are permitted to use phones before and after school.

What are the Diamond Daily Announcements?

Daily Announcements are made to the students over the PA system each morning and afternoon. As a service, the PTA emails a recap of those same announcements daily to parents who have donated to the PTA and provided their email address to the directory team (see page 2 of this newsletter for more information). They are also posted on the Diamond website.

How does my child register for after school athletics?

Diamond offers after school Varsity, JV, and intramural sports every semester. Information will be available in late August regarding fall sports offerings, including what is required prior to participation, user fees, and the registration process.

When do after school clubs start and how late do they go?

Fall clubs usually begin in mid-October and run through early December. Information on the different club offerings and when they take place will be posted on the Clubs page of the Diamond website by late September. http://lps.lexingtonma.org//site/Default.aspx?PageID=221

Do I need to pack a lunch for my child? A snack?

Students have the option to either bring a packed lunch or purchase lunch from the cafeteria. They will use the same account/student ID code that they did in elementary school. Students do not have a snack period before or after lunch.

Does my child need clothing for gym class?

Yes, students are required to have a change of clothes for gym. Changing rooms are available for students to change before & after gym class; they store their gym clothing in their main locker. Please remind your child to bring gym clothes home regularly for washing.
