Parent Coffee: Building Communication with your Teen

  • When: Wednesday January 9, 8:45 am

  • Where: Clarke Middle School, Cafeteria

Please join your Clarke & Diamond counselors and social workers for a parent coffee. We are excited to collaborate with Lexington Youth and Family Services (LYFS) social worker, Erin Deery, in offering an interactive presentation on building communication with your teens. Parents will have an opportunity to learn about some popular theories on parent-teen communication through hands-on activities, review of resources, and discussion.

Please join us for a free movie screening. Including Samuel, a documentary by Dan Habib, discussion moderated by Joe Petner, PhD.  Including Samuel chronicles the Habib family’s efforts to include their son Samuel, who has cerebral palsy, in every facet of their lives.  The film honestly portrays his family’s hopes and struggles, as well as the experiences of four other individuals with disabilities and their families.  Sponsored by LexSEPAC/SEPTA, Lexington Commission on Disability, the Lexington Human Rights Commission, and the Lexington Venue.  Space is limited, please RSVP to https://tinyurl.com/LexingtonIncludingSamuel.

Raising White Kids: Building Skills for Raising Anti-Racist Children, Jan 24

  • When: Thursday, January 24, 7-9 pm

Jennifer Harvey’s book, Raising White Kids: Bringing up Children in a Racially Unjust America, offers both general guidance and specific strategies for addressing issues of race with white children. The workshop will begin with a summary of Harvey’s central ideas and some examples of skillful responses to challenging situations, followed by smaller group sessions to practice and discuss responses to possible scenarios. Reading the book ahead of time will be helpful but is not necessary. RSVPs are helpful but not necessary; questions welcomed at: FRR@follen.org. The Teen Summer Expo brings the directors of a wide variety of enriching summer programs together with teenagers and their parents for a FREE, informative and easy-to-manage evening. There will be options for every interest and budget.

Untold Stories: The Invisible work of Motherhood, Jan 19

Our work as mothers is fulfilling, and so very purposeful. It brings us joy, and feelings of loving and being loved that are different from other relationships in our lives.  But that is not our whole story. A mother’s story is incomplete without the arc of her life’s work as a mother.  Come hear the other side.

True Story Theater and Dr. Kumkum Malik invite you to tell your story of your work as a mother, hear the stories of other mothers, and then watch these stories be enacted live using improve theater.  Event details.
